CSCO Market Currents more »
  • Wednesday 2:08 PM It looks as if Cisco (CSCO) has gained a healthy amount of router share in recent months, likely at Juniper's (JNPR) expense: Whereas IDC estimates the global router market fell 2.3% Y/Y in calendar Q4, Cisco reported 8% growth for its router business during its FQ2 earnings call. In addition, Cisco's switch business grew 8% in FQ2, better than the 5.1% Q4 growth estimated for the overall market. (previously) [Tech]
  • Tuesday 11:08 AM Hoping to quash a New York Post rumor to the contrary, a Cisco (CSCO) exec says his firm is committed to the set-top box market, while adding Cisco is working with carriers to deploy its Videoscape solution for delivering cloud-based video. However, a Light Reading source also claims Cisco is shopping its set-top unit (albeit "selectively"), as it deals with growing competition and price pressure. [Tech, M&A]
  • Friday 6:47 PM Why is Cisco (CSCO) so concerned about Microsoft's (MSFT) acquisition of Skype? It's not just that Microsoft's Lync platform competes with Cisco's unified communications offerings. It's that Microsoft's plans to integrate Lync with Skype could pave the way for a platform that bridges corporate and consumer communications. Cisco can't afford to be shut out, hence its demand for "interoperability." [Tech]
  • Friday 12:34 PM Chinese IT giant Huawei was the world's top seller of optical networking gear in Q4, claims Infonetics; its 35% Y/Y sales increase easily outpaced the 8% growth seen by the overall market. #2 vendor Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) also gained share thanks to 20% growth, while #3 Ciena (CIEN) gained a little with 10% growth. In contrast to its gains in the switch and router markets, Cisco's (CSCO) optical networking share declined. [Tech]
